In the Church today we spend a lot of time tormenting ourselves about our failures.  The very idealism we had before makes them  seem even more ruinous than they are.  We think of all the wrong things done, and the failure to do great things.  Against that background, it seems perverse to say we should learn how to do nothing.  But that is what meditation is: doing nothing.  If a wheel is spinning in the wrong direction, it has to stop completely before it can begin to turn in the right direction.  Stopping completely sounds easy, but in truth it is not: doing nothing is one of the hardest things to do.  Like the world around us, we are so geared to action that we see only one opposite to it: failure.  But its real opposite is meditation. 

            For ‘meditation’ you can read ‘contemplation’.  In modern usage these words are considered interchangeable.   They mean silent presence to God.  For our own sanity – even if for no better reason – we need to learn how to practise it.  It is already flourishing in many parishes around the world.  These talks are addressed to that movement.
